The First Expressway in Hong Kong - Tuen Mun Road

The earliest Tuen Mun Road, connecting Tsuen Wan and Tuen Mun, was constructed in two stages. The construction of one three-lane carriageway to contain two-way traffic as Stage I was commenced in October 1974 and completed in May 1978. Construction of the second carriageway as Stage II was commenced in July 1978 and completed in May 1983, which brought the Tuen Mun Road as a dual three-lane highway of road length about 17km. Because of steep sidelong ground along many sections of the route, the two carriageways have been separated over a considerable part of the route and constructed on different levels to economise on earthworks.

Today, the total length of expressway in Hong Kong is about 140km.
