After obtaining funding approval from Financial Committee of Legislative Council for the Hong Kong Section of Guangzhou – Shenzhen – Hong Kong Express Rail Link project on 16 January 2010, the project commenced on 28 January 2010. The progress of the key areas of the works is as follows:
a)
For the initial works contracts, pile foundations at Nam Cheong are being removed to clear the way for the Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs).
b)
For tunneling contracts, the ongoing construction works include construction of Mai Po to Ngau Tam Mei and Mei Lai Road to Hoi Ting Road tunnels by TBMs, construction of Tse Uk Tsuen to Mei Lai Road tunnels by the drill and blast method, construction of cut and cover approach tunnels to West Kowloon Terminus, adit excavations to access the main running tunnels, and shaft excavations for launching and receipt of TBMs.
c)
At West Kowloon Terminus, the excavation for the construction of terminal substructure is underway while the construction of the basement slabs at the southern part of the terminus is in progress.
