Project Objective :

The proposed Tuen Mun – Chek Lap Kok Link and Tuen Mun Western Bypass will provide the most direct route between the Northwest New Territories (NWNT) and Lantau, joining the Kong Sham Western Highway, the port back-up areas in the NWNT, the Tuen Mun River Trade Terminal,

the Ecopark, the Hong Kong – Zhuhai – Macao Bridge, the Hong Kong International Airport (the Airport), the proposed Lantau Logistics Park and various North Lantau developments.  Upon completion, the new route will significantly reduce the journey time between the NWNT and Lantau. The Project will release some capacity of the existing roads such as Tuen Mun Road, Ting Kau Bridge, Lantau Link and North Lantau Highway, offer strong support to the logistics industry and reinforce the Airport as an international and regional aviation hub through providing an alternative land access for the Airport.

 

Description:

  1. Tuen Mun – Chek Lap Kok Link: a dual two-lane carriageway approximately 9km long, including an undersea tunnel about 5km long and reclamation at the northern and southern landfalls; connecting Tuen Mun Western Bypass at Tuen Mun Area 40 in the north with the proposed Hong Kong – Zhuhai – Macao Bridge Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities, Hong Kong International Airport and North Lantau in the south;
  2. Tuen Mun Western Bypass: a dual two-lane carriageway approximately 8km long, including a land tunnel; connecting Kong Sham Western Highway in the north and Tuen Mun – Chek Lap Kok Link in the south;
  3. a toll plaza, including an administrative building and ancillary buildings, workshops and operator facilities, as well as provision of toll facilities; and
  4. associated civil, structural, electrical and mechanical, geotechnical, marine, environmental protection and mitigation works, ventilation buildings and associated facilities, roads and street furniture, tunnel operation and control systems, traffic control and surveillance system, etc.

Current Situation :

 

We gazetted on 21 August 2009 the proposed road works for Tuen Mun – Chek Lap Kok Link under “Roads (Works, Use and Compensation) Ordinance” (Press Releases and G.N. 5157).

 

The Environmental Protection Department approved the environmental impact assessment report of the project on 23 October 2009 and issued the Environmental Permit on 4 November 2009.
